I have been a follower and I have been a leader. I have been around a lot of different kind of leadership structures. I have also been in the position of leadership and watching how leaders/volunteers around me have worked. The one thing that I am always surprised by with working with people (in any environment) is ABILITY and AVAILABILITY.
One of the things that I have heard over the years is this quote, “God is not interested in your ability. He’s interested in your availability.” Even though I agree with this statement, I also disagree with this statement. God is interested in both; He wants our abilities and our availability. Both are important to HIM.
I am not a person that is gifted with many special talents (abilities). I can’t sing, dance, not athletic, not sure what a musical note is. I am not a mechanic, not a magician, can’t dunk a basketball; you don’t want me to lead worship (unless its at a deaf church). I am not a person that is full of talent and ability.
There are some people that are just naturally gifted. These people can pick up a guitar and be an expert in a short time. These people are naturally gifted at academics, art, sports, and so on. These people annoy me!! Just kidding…I have had friends that were blessed with all the natural talents and the rest of us got the leftovers.
There are many people in the church today that have some great talents and abilities. I am so impressed with the great speakers, the amazing and creative videos and the worship. Right when I think I have heard the best worship music, I hear new music that surprises me. There is so much talent/ability and the Lord wants to be glorified in this.
I feel like Moses most of the time. During the burning bush experience, God called Moses to lead the Israelite slaves in the promise land. As soon as Moses heard this call from God, he replied with every reason why he could not do it. He told God all about his inability and lack of talent. He said, “God I cannot lead these people; I’m old, I’m a murderer, I run away from problems, I’m only a shepherd, and I STUTTER!” This is where the truth of the quote; “God is not interested in your ability, He’s interested in your availability”, comes into the mix.
God was not looking at Moses ability but availability.
I may not have a lot of talent/ability but what I lack in this I can make up for in Availability. I told God when I was young, “I don’t have a lot but ALL I have is yours. Use me!”
Someone once asked me, “Who is your favorite kind of volunteer (leaders)?”
I love talent and skill. I love people who can relate to others but more than anything else, I LOVE PEOPLE WHO SHOW UP!
My best friend told me once; “Wherever you are, BE THERE!” Be there 100%. Be in the now…Carpe Diem! It’s hard to BE THERE when you don’t SHOW UP!
Are you a person (leader) who is available?
Are you Reliable?
When people are reliable/show up; you begin to trust them more.
This is not just in leadership and volunteers. This is true in your spiritual walk.
Does God trust you? Are you RELIABLE (Faithful)?
If He calls, do you answer?
Do you spend your time telling HIM all the excuses and reasons why you cannot do it (your inability)?
In Other words, it comes down to Faithfulness. We know that God is faithful; that He will never leave us nor forsake us. We know that He sticks closer than a brother. We know that HE IS FAITHFULL.
The question is, Are WE?
Are we faithful with Him? Our commitments? Our Time? Our Heart?
Luke 16:10-12 (the message) “If you’re honest in small things, you’ll be honest in big things; If you’re a crook in small things, you’ll be a crook in big things. If you’re not honest in small jobs, who will put you in charge of the store?”
We need to be faithful in the small things.
What I find amazing is this; finding those special people that have both ABILITY and the AVAILABITY…WOW!! These people are hard to find.
Here is the TRUTH as a leader: I would rather hire based on AVAILABITY rather than ABILITY. You can rent someone who has ability but you want to hire people who are dedicated, work hard and love the vision.
I love working with/leading people that are Reliable and Available. Watermark is working because of these people. God can do a lot with our lack of talent and our availability.
He can do great things with people that SHOW UP! That are AVAILABLE!
No more excuses!
Isaiah 6:8 “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
